Home Energy Audits: Are They Worth It?
What an assessment involves, what it costs, and when it changes the outcome of a project.

A home energy assessment replaces guesswork with measurement. For homes older than about 25 years, it almost always finds something the owner did not suspect.
What happens during a visit
- A blower door test depressurizes the house to measure leakage.
- Infrared imaging shows where insulation is missing or compressed.
- Combustion appliances are tested for safe operation.
- The auditor produces a prioritized report with estimated savings.
When it is not necessary
A newly built, tightly constructed home with documented insulation levels may not need one. Everything else usually benefits.
