Home Energy Audits: Are They Worth It?

A home energy assessment replaces guesswork with measurement. For homes older than about 25 years, it almost always finds something the owner did not suspect.

What happens during a visit

  1. A blower door test depressurizes the house to measure leakage.
  2. Infrared imaging shows where insulation is missing or compressed.
  3. Combustion appliances are tested for safe operation.
  4. The auditor produces a prioritized report with estimated savings.

When it is not necessary

A newly built, tightly constructed home with documented insulation levels may not need one. Everything else usually benefits.
