Are New Windows Worth It for Energy Savings?
Window replacement is one of the most expensive efficiency projects — and rarely the first one to do.

New windows improve comfort, noise and appearance. Purely as an energy investment, they usually rank behind air sealing, insulation and equipment upgrades.
Cheaper measures that address the same complaint
- Weatherstripping and sash locks that pull the sashes tight
- Storm windows over sound original units
- Cellular shades on the coldest exposures
- Caulking the trim and exterior perimeter
When replacement makes sense
Rotted frames, failed seals, painted-shut units and single-pane glass in a home already sealed and insulated are all reasonable triggers for replacement.
- Home Upgrades
- Energy Efficiency
